Event Profile: Lake Sonoma 50

Situated just north of the San Francisco Bay Area is Healdsburg, California known for it's abundance of world class wineries, some of the finest farm-to-table dining in the world, picture-perfect rolling countryside of lush valleys and redwood forests that cradle the renowned Russian River and Lake Sonoma.

Lake Sonoma, about 10 miles from Healdsburg, plays host to a slew of water activities with more than 40 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails that meander around the two main arms of the lake. The lake is the epicenter for all things outdoors during the spring and summer months; including the highly competitive, Western States 100 'Golden Ticket' race the Lake Sonoma 50 on April 14th. The top two female and male finishers out of 400+ entrants will receive entry into the prestigious WS100 starting at Squaw Valley on June 23rd.

An out and back course that takes in rolling coastal foothills with giant redwood groves, oak woodlands, grassy slopes, endless vistas and unrelenting terrain, the Lake Sonoma 50 is a top ultramarathon for runners from all over the country.

With only the first 2.4 miles on a paved country road, the remaining 47-plus miles are nearly 90% Northern California coastal mountain singletrack with small sections of fire roads. The rugged terrain is ever changing, and although there are no huge climbs, the course packs a powerful punch as it gains nearly 10k feet.

With a 14-hour time limit, just finishing the Lake Sonoma 50 is a feat in itself. Look for leaders like pro ultrarunners Jim Walmsley, Jared Hazen and Mario Mendoza to complete the race in less than half that time, likely coming in at just over six hours.
