It’s seems only fitting that the wheelie king, classics crusher, and all-around cycling phenom Peter Sagan would also have a passion for riding gravel. Before the 3x world champion lines up at the start of Amgen Tour of California looking to add to his record 16 stage victories, he’ll be riding gravel bikes in Truckee, California during his namesake Peter Sagan Gravel GranFondo from May 3-5.
It was likely during last year’s Tour of California stage into South Lake Tahoe that Sagan noticed the endless number of dirt road options in the area and decided a dirt fondo was in order. The town of Truckee sits just 15 miles Northwest of Lake Tahoe’s Kings Beach and offers an abundance of dirt Forestry roads that run through the Sierra Nevada range and are free of cars. Between the quiet roads and the area’s diverse terrain it sets the stage for a special weekend that includes more than just trying to rub elbows with Sagan out in the dirt.
Bike Monkey, organizers of a number of events including Levi’s Gran Fondo in Santa Rosa, partnered to create a unique event that makes it much more than just a ride. A fundraising gala will officially kick things off on Thursday, May 3rd, followed by a VIP ride and lunch with Sagan on Friday. Saturday is the big day, where riders can choose between multiple route options, with the longest featuring 5,500 feet of elevation gain over 68 miles that includes timed sections and prizes in multiple age groups. Post-ride, like any good gran fondo, it’s all about the party with a festival that includes a large expo, music, beer, and local food.
We’re proud to announce that Amp Human Performance will be an event partner and will be present in the expo. The event is limited to 1,500 riders and is expected to fill up--don’t wait if you’re interested in taking part in the inaugural event. For more info visit www.saganfondo.com
